CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE-YOLANDA

“Roderick, I had such an amazing time with you this Thanksgiving.” Yolanda said.

“Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed yourself.”

“Your family is so welcoming. Your mom is such an amazing woman. I truly admire her.”

“Yes. She is the backbone of this family. I’m glad you two hit it off. It makes me happy to see we are moving closer as a couple and as a family.”

“I do too.”

“I can’t wait to meet your family as well.” Roderick said.

The two of them continued to walk down the walking path behind Roderick’s house. They took time from the family to go for a walk to help their stomachs go down from the holiday meal they ate. The boys were back at the house playing with Roderick’s nephews. Yolanda and Roderick wanted to spend some quality alone time.

“I guess I should make this happen.” Yolanda said.

“Are you uncomfortable with our relationship?”

“No, it isn’t that at all. I just don’t know how my adopted mom is going to act. Nothing I do is ever good enough for her.”

“Oh I understand. I’m sorry to hear you two don’t have a good relationship.”

“It has never been good. From the time my parents adopted me, I knew she and I wouldn’t have the best relationship. My dad and I are great but my adopted mother is the antithesis of motherhood. I always felt I was just a paycheck to her.”

“Aww baby…” Roderick said as he pulled Yolanda closer to him. “I know I’m not your mom and all that…I don’t see you as a paycheck. I see you as my future. I can’t go back to your past and fix that, but what I can do is vow to you I will work tirelessly to make our future as bright and happy as I can.”

Yolanda was moved to tears as Roderick stood there as strength for her in this moment of weakness. She had never been able to lean on a man before because he husband was never there for her emotionally, yet here she stood with Roderick vulnerable and open but comfortable and peaceful because he held her in his arms. She didn’t mind the emotions she was going through because she felt the strength of Roderick. This feeling is what Yolanda always wanted.

This moment made Yolanda remember listening to a psychologist on the radio about a month ago. He was giving advice to a caller who was involved in an unhappy relationship and had low self-esteem. He told the caller he needed to love himself more than he loved unhappiness. Yolanda took another step for team Yolanda and decided she was going to run towards happiness and away from those negative, hurtful feelings she bottled up and stored. She decided, there in Roderick’s arms, to break the glass jars with which she’d stored her hurts.

Too many times, people bottle hurts and pains and carry the weight of abuse, neglect and self-hatred. Yolanda was one of those people. The weight of her past had kept her in a place of unforgiveness and bitterness.
